Dahl and Nygaard pioneered the object-oriented paradigm with the Simula language. This talk explores how these foundational ideas, and their descendants, help us rethink the way we organize code in new paradigms—specifically machine-checked proofs and effectful programs. This fusion of ideas presents exciting challenges for language design and compiler construction. Solving them unlocks new expressivity and modularity without sacrificing performance or soundness.
